The painting behind me in almost every ad we run was made by the woman in this video. Her name is Sydney Faulkner.

Three years ago I went looking for a "woman in the arena" piece, the Roosevelt quote as an image instead of words, and a stranger on Instagram pointed me to Sydney. That painting has been in the background of my office, my content, and nearly every ad since, and it outperforms almost everything else we run.

So we flew to her studio in Wilmington, North Carolina to talk to her properly, and to start building something together. Sydney is officially the artist on the Salesgirls team. There's a collection coming, and you'll see it here first.

Then, in the middle of the conversation, she said one sentence about how she decides what to charge and I stopped the interview.

This one is for every creative, service provider, and business owner who has ever sent a quote and felt sick about it after. We get into pricing on worth instead of permission, why meaning is what makes work valuable, how structure makes creatives more free instead of less, and what changes when you stop selling the object and start selling the story inside it.
