Show Notes

Do you teach from a place of knowledge or from a place of knowing? There's a MAJOR difference!

Macy here and just recently I was watching a documentary that revealed something that plays so true in business -- and this is this idea of people teaching or talking on subjects that they secretly struggle with as well.

It's an easy trap to fall into and one that I've personally fallen into plenty of times. The way this starts to happen, as a business owner or entrepreneur, is when you are personally struggling with something -- whether that be hitting your sales goals, growing your team, refining your leadership, meeting deadlines, etc. -- and you start to seek learning on this specific subject.

For example:

  • If you're trying to grow your sales skills, you might take sales training.
  • If you're honing your copywriting skills, you might hire a copy coach.
  • If you're leveling up your leadership, you might read a few John Maxwell books.

As you're learning these things, it might feel tempting to start talking about or teaching what you're learning. So you start to teach alongside your learning and this is what it means to teach from a place of knowledge. It's just information that you're reiterating. You're not usually super sold on it, you aren't really an expert in it and the teaching might not even come very natural for you.

Knowing is more of a being -- when you teach from knowing, it comes from a place of ownership. You're an expert in it, the teaching flows from you naturally and you feel extremely confident in it.

In this episode, Macy talks more about this trap and how to avoid falling into it as a business owner and how it will make you grow even more when you do avoid it.
